Abilene Christian first fielded a football team in 1919, competing as an independent school. Although the Wildcats spent brief periods in the Texas Intercollegiate Athletic Association, the Texas Conference, and the Gulf Coast Conference, they were independent for most of the program's first 40 years.
From 1964 until 1972 the team played in the Southland Conference, before moving the Lone Star Conference for the start of the 1973 season. Membership in the Lone Star lasted for almost 4 decades until 2012, and was followed by another independent season in 2013.
The Wildcats played in the Southland Conference from 2014 to 2020, before a single year in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC). When the WAC and ASUN conferences merged their football leagues ahead of the 2023 season, Abilene Christian became a member of the new United Athletic Conference.
