Exeter Phoenix

Exeter Phoenix is a multi-artform events venue in Bradninch Place, off Gandy Street in Exeter city centre. It presents live music, theatre, dance, comedy, contemporary art exhibitions, cinema screenings, DJ events, talks, family activities and creative courses and workshops.

The present building began life as part of the University College, opening in 1911. In 1984, Exeter City Council, the Arts Council and Devon County Council acquired it from the university and established the independent-charity-run Exeter and Devon Arts Centre. A Lottery-supported redevelopment in 1997 remodelled the auditorium, backstage, kitchen and café-bar areas and linked the main building to its 1940s annexe. The organisation was renamed and reopened as Exeter Phoenix in February 1999. Further improvements between 2008 and 2018 added features including the auditorium balcony, Studio 74 cinema, refreshed gallery spaces and a new reception.
