York is home to a wide range of accommodation options to suit all travellers. You’ll find everything from luxury inns to smart, chain budget hotels here, in addition to a plethora of apartment rentals. The city is very compact, so no matter where you stay, you will be within easy reach of all the sights either on foot or via bus.
The city centre is roughly defined as the area encircled by the city walls or located thereabouts, and this is the best place to base yourself if you are only in town for a short stay and/or are focused solely on the major tourist sights. Here, any hotel will be a stone’s throw away from a medieval lane or ancient church. This is also perfect for those who enjoy nightlife as York is said to have a pub for every day of the year.
The Southbank area, which is the name given to the district located across the Skeldergate Bridge from the city centre, is a great place to consider if you would like to truly feel like a local or are a family looking for a quieter place to stay. Southbank is anchored by the charming shops of Bishopthorpe Road and leafy Rowntree Park and while “brand” hotels are not common in Southbank, there is plenty of cosy bed & breakfasts located here.
