Switchfoot, originally briefly known as "Chin Up", are an American alternative rock band from San Diego, California. Drawing on alternative rock, post-grunge, indie rock, pop rock and Christian rock, the group centres on brothers Jon and Tim Foreman with drummer Chad Butler, multi-instrumentalist Jerome Fontamillas and guitarist Boaz Roberts. Their surf culture background and reflective, faith-tinged lyrics give their songs a distinctive mix of driving guitars and contemplative themes.
Formed in 1996, Switchfoot first built a following in the Christian music scene before crossing over when several tracks appeared in the 2002 film "A Walk to Remember". Their major-label debut "The Beautiful Letdown" (2003) produced signature singles "Meant to Live" and "Dare You to Move" and became a multi-platinum success. Later albums including "Nothing Is Sound", "Oh! Gravity.", "Hello Hurricane", "Vice Verses", "Fading West", "Where the Light Shines Through", "Native Tongue", "Interrobang", "This Is Our Christmas Album" and "Forever Now" have reinforced their reputation; "Hello Hurricane" won the Grammy Award for Best Rock or Rap Gospel Album and their energetic live shows remain central to their appeal.
