Sri Lankans are known for their passion for cricket. The country was first represented at an international level in 1926, under the name Ceylon. In 1981, Sri Lanka was granted Full Membership in the International Cricket Council and became the eighth country to acquire Test status.
Although the Lions have traditionally been considered underdogs, in their more recent history, they have achieved remarkable success. Sri Lanka has featured at the Cricket World Cup on more than 10 occasions, winning the competition in 1996 and reaching two consecutive finals in 2007 and 2011. The team won the Asia Cup in 2022, defeating Pakistan in the Final.
