Glasgow Fair Raceday is a thrilling single-day flat racing meeting for thoroughbred horses held annually at Ayr Racecourse in Ayr, Scotland, UK.
The Glasgow Fair is a holiday held in Glasgow every July dating back to the 12th century; the earliest occurred in 1190. Until the 1960s, most local businesses and factories closed on 'Fair Friday' to allow workers and their families to attend. Most would leave the city and travel to the Firth of Clyde or Ayrshire coast. This practice was known as going "doon the watter" ("down the water"). To this day, the holiday (now on a Monday) is observed and people still travel "doon the watter"; some travelling as far as Ayr to enjoy a day at the races. Held at the height of summer when you can dress in your finest hot-weather fashion, Glasgow Fair Raceday is the perfect way to spend an afternoon and early evening.
