The match now known as the Australian Football League (AFL) Grand Final was first held in 1898, as part of the Victorian Football League's (VFL) second-ever season. The winners of that inaugural Grand Final were Fitzroy, who defeated Essendon at the Junction Oval in Melbourne.
In 1902, the Grand Final was held at the Melbourne Cricket Ground for the first time, and the venue has remained the traditional home of the fixture ever since, with other stadia only used on rare occasions.
As a historic fixture and the deciding game for what is arguably Australia's most popular football code, the AFL Grand Final is one of the most famous sporting events in the country. It attracts a sell-out, capacity crowd every year, and is watched by millions more on televisions in Australia and around the world.
