The Cincinnati Open, formerly known as the Western & Southern Open and also known as the Cincinnati Masters, is the oldest tennis tournament in the United States that is still played in its founding city. First held in 1899 at Avondale Athletic Club, over the years the event changed its name many times and moved between multiple venues in Cincinnati, before settling in its current home, the purpose-built Lindner Family Tennis Center, in 1979. In 2024 the event rebranded as the Cincinnati Open, reverting back to the tournament's original name.
Although the Cincinnati Open is both an ATP Masters 1000 and WTA 1000-tier event, its relatively smaller scale has given it a reputation as a tournament which offers a uniquely intimate spectator experience, with more opportunities to see elite athletes up-close; many fans are thrilled to interact with and get an autograph from their favourite players!
