Old Montreal and Downtown are the central hubs of Montreal, with everything you could want and need at the tips of your fingers. But while Downtown is the cosmopolitan centre of the city filled with business people and students, Old Montreal is the historic centre filled with beautiful landmarks.

To the southwest of the centre, Saint-Henri and Little Burgundy are affordable yet chic inner-city neighbourhoods suited to young professionals and families. They are refined yet lively with a number of popular bars and cafes and parks.

The France-inspired Le Plateau Mont-Royale is another family-friendly spot that offers quaint historic townhouses, nearby hiking trails, and a laid-back atmosphere.

Mile End is a cooler, cheaper, and more alternative neighbourhood known for its artistic edge. Here you’ll find yourself in hipster hangouts, thrift shops, book stores, and craft breweries during the day, and partying in its eclectic bars at night.

Downtown and the neighbouring Gay Village compete with Mile End for the party crown, as both areas are buzzing most evenings with a fun and diverse crowd. Although the entire city is pretty gay-friendly, the Village is most eager to welcome gay couples.

Each of Montreal's neighbourhoods has its own distinct character, and where you stay determines what aspect of the city you most want to see.
