The Spaniard – whose previous best finish at a major was in the same event in 2019, when he finished tied for 3rd – carded a 4-under-par score of 67 on the final day to take him to 6-under for the tournament and 1 shot clear of Louis Oosthuizen, who had finished Round 3 with a share of the lead.
Rahm’s victory at Torrey Pines in San Diego came just 2 weeks after he was forced to withdraw from the final round of the Memorial Tournament – in which he held a 6-shot lead – after testing positive for COVID-19.
Next year, the US Open will return to The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts after more than 30 years away from the venue. The Country Club is the site of perhaps the most iconic moment in US Open history – Francis Ouimet’s famous victory in 1913. Ouimet, a 20-year-old amateur who grew up across the street from the course and was a former caddy there, saw off some of the world’s top pros to win the competition and write his name in the annals of golfing history. His win was later the subject of a book and a Disney film, The Greatest Game Ever Played.
The Country Club also hosted the infamous 1999 Ryder Cup, which became known as the Battle of Brookline due to the particularly bitter rivalry between the United States and Europe in that year’s competition. That rivalry came to a head when the USA’s Justin Leonard holed a sensational 45-foot putt on the 17th hole in his singles match with José María Olazábal, prompting wild celebrations from the US team on the green before the Spaniard had chance to take his putt. Olazábal subsequently missed his putt, sealing the Americans’ victory in the tournament.
