The Dell Technologies Match Play returns to Austin Country Club from 23 – 27 March as the world’s best golfers go directly head-to-head in the thrilling match play format. Unlike most golf events, which are scored in the traditional stroke play format where the winner is determined by the overall number of strokes, in match play the player who won the most holes is the winner. This is the same format used to dramatic effect in team events such as the Ryder Cup, Presidents Cup, and Solheim Cup, but in this tournament the players are competing individually.
The field is incredibly exclusive, comprised only of the top 64 players on the planet as determined by the Official World Golf Rankings, so the likes of Dustin Johnson, Rory McIlroy, and Jon Rahm will be in action. The 64 players are split into 16 groups of 4 and face off in a round-robin format Wednesday through Friday with 32 matches played each day, before the group winners advance to the knock-out rounds over the weekend.
As an event in the World Golf Championships series, it is among the most prestigious golf has to offer, behind only the majors and the Players Championship. It has the prize money to rival those tournaments too, with a $12 million purse to be split between the competitors, which is official money on the PGA Tour, DP World Tour, and Japan Golf Tour. The winner will also take home the Walter Hagen Cup, a Wedgwood trophy named after the 11-time major-winning golf legend.
