On Sunday, Borussia Dortmund were able to leapfrog bitter rivals Bayern Munich to sit top of the table with just one game to go. Bayern lost 3-1 at home to 3rd-place RB Leipzig on Saturday in a rather unconvincing display despite having a lead at half-time. Bayern sacked manager Julian Nagelsmann in March (when they were sat in 2nd place in the table) and quickly brought in Thomas Tuchel hoping he would secure the trophy.
All that meant that Borussia Dortmund just needed to beat Augsburg when they played them away on Sunday afternoon to go top oce more. The away side were certainly helped when Augsburg went down to 10 men after Felix Usuokhai was sent off for a foul on Donyell Malen. Dortmund went on to win the game by a convincing 3 goals to nil, but they’ll need to hold the celebrations until this weekend.
Germany’s elite football league has been dominated by Bayern Munich who have won the title 31 times including the last 10, however, the league – founded in Dortmund – has been won by Borussia Dortmund 8 times and they have been runners-up 10 times, usually falling short to their fierce Bavarian rivals. In recent seasons, the race has been tight but Bayern have still lifted the Bundesliga Meisterschale, but have they finally slipped up and let Dortmund through?
The final games of the 2022-23 season will kick off at 15:30 (CEST) on Saturday 27 May. Borussia Dortmund are hosting 9th-place Mainz at Signal Iduna Park, while Bayern Munich will travel to RheinEnergieStadion to play 10th-place Köln. If Bayern win their match, Dortmund will have to win theirs due to Bayern’s superior goal difference. If Bayern lose or draw, Dortmund will win whatever the result is in their game.
A title race that comes down to the final day of the season is truly one not to be missed, especially when the dominant power might be toppled from their throne!
