The United States women' national team, better known as the USWNT, represents the USA in women's international football competitions such as the FIFA Women's World Cup and Olympic Games.
History
Despite the United States being historically slow to adopt football (soccer) compared to the rest of the world, their women's team has been a powerhouse throughout its history. The USWNT began playing in 1985, following the creation of college teams throughout the 1970s.
Just 6 years later, they became the first ever women's world champions at the inaugural World Cup in 1991. When they won the title again in 1999, Brandi Chastain's shirt-off celebration in the final provided one of the most iconic moments in the sport's history. The USWNT later became back-to-back winners with victories in 2015 and 2019; to date they have never finished outside the top 3 at a World Cup.
The Olympic Games has also proved a great source of success for the USA; between 1996 and 2012, they won 4 gold medals and 1 silver.
