Ski mountaineering - sometimes abbreviated to "skimo" - is a type of skiing where competitors climb mountains with skis to be able to ski down again. The sport is particularly popular in the Alps and Italy, so it is no surprise that it has been added to the Olympic programme for Milano Cortina 2026. 

Competitive ski mountaineering is a timed race that follows a well-established trail through difficult winter terrain and a series of checkpoints. It is a sport that combines backcountry skiing, mountaineering, ski touring, and Telemark skiing.
