Skeleton is a winter sliding sport where a competitor rides a small sled - known as a skeleton bobsled - down a frozen track while lying face down and head-first.
The sport was first played at the Winter Olympics in St. Moritz in 1928, and it was played again in 1948 before it was dropped from the Olympics. Fortunately, both men's and women's skeleton events were included in the reintroduction of the sport at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. The first metal sleds, which were introduced in 1892 and were said to resemble a human skeleton, gave the sport its name. It's a thrilling, fast-paced sport in which the fastest time down the track wins.
For the 2026 Winter Olympics, the skeleton competitions will be held at Pista Eugenio Monti in Cortina d'Ampezzo.
