The FA Community Shield is the annual curtain-raiser of the English football season, contested between the Premier League champions and the FA Cup winners of the previous campaign. It was founded in 1908 as the Charity Shield – proceeds go to charity and community initiatives – and was initially contested between a professional team and a top amateur side until the current format was settled on in 1930.
In 2024, FA Cup winners Manchester United lost 7-6 on penalties to Premier League holders Manchester City after the pair played out a 1-1 draw.
