Evolution Championship Series Japan was first mooted as early as 2010, following the success of the original Evo format in the USA, but it was not until 2018 that an Evo Japan event actually took place. The inaugural edition, held 22 years after the first Evo event was held in the USA, served as a direct spin-off from its American cousin, focusing on video games in the fighting and combat genre. Large-scale competitions and entertainment events are at the heart of the 3-day event, with the main titles showcased at Evo Japan often similar to those exhibited in American Evo tournaments.
Following a 2-year hiatus as a result of the Coronavirus pandemic, Evo Japan returned to the country for the first time since 2020; Evo Japan 2025 will take place at the iconic Tokyo Big Sight conference centre across 3 days in May.
