Cross-country skiing is a form of skiing where skiers rely on their own power to move across snow-covered terrain; they are not necessarily being propelled downhill with the assistance of gravity.
Cross-country skiing has been a part of the Winter Olympics since the first competition in 1924, making it one of the sports with the longest history. The original form of skiing, from which all skiing disciplines, including alpine skiing and ski jumping, evolved, is very similar to the modern form of cross-country skiing. Skiers use their arms to push on ski poles against the snow to propel themselves, either forward (classic style) or side-to-side (skate skiing).
For the 2026 Winter Olympics, the cross-country skiing events will be held at the Lago di Tesero Cross-Country Skiing Stadium.
