Nicknamed the Cricket Cranes, the Uganda Cricket Team are members of the International Cricket Council (ICC) and participate in various ICC tournaments and series. The team has made notable contributions to the sport in Africa.
Cricket in Uganda has roots stretching back to the late 19th century and since the country gained independence in 1962, the sport has flourished. In 1998, Uganda became an associate member of the ICC – a highly significant milestone in the development of organised cricket in the country.
In recent years, Uganda have enjoyed steady progression on the international stage. Victory in the 2001 ICC Trophy was a sign of the nation's cricketing potential, and in 2023, Uganda qualified for their biggest tournament to date – the 2024 T20 World Cup.
Despite challenges created by a lack of funding and limited cricketing infrastructure, Uganda has continued to forge a sturdy domestic cricket structure, which includes a school cricket system that has become the backbone for nurturing future talent. The Cricket Cranes aim to compete at even higher levels in the future, and their journey towards becoming one of the world's more established cricketing nations continues.
