The UEFA European Women’s Championship, or simply the “Women’s Euro,” is a quadrennial international football event which debuted in 1982. Although the competition was not initially given UEFA status, as women’s football rose in popularity, European football’s governing body eventually recognised the competition as one of its own.
Currently, all 52 UEFA-member women’s national teams take part in a three-year qualification process, which culminates with a 16-team final stage. All 16 finalists play a round-robin group stage and a direct knock-out stage.
To date, only 5 nations have managed to lift the Women’s Euro trophy. Having won on 8 occasions, Germany is the tournament’s most successful team by some distance. The other past winners are Norway with 2 titles, and Sweden, the Netherlands, and England with 1 title each. The Lionesses will be the defending champions when the competition heads to Switzerland in 2025.
