Gamla Stan is Stockholm’s tourist hub, and therefore the most pricey area to stay. However, you get what you pay for because its central location allows you to get to many of the city’s other islands quickly and easily, although most attractions are right on its doorstep.

Norrmalm is Sweden’s bustling shopping district with everything from boutiques, department stores, and high-street retailers to street food markets and independent shops spread throughout.

Södermalm, otherwise known as ‘alternative Stockholm’ is the city’s hipster hotspot as it’s filled with – you guessed it – a shocking amount of cool alternative bars and shops that offer a new and exciting take on shopping and dining. What’s more, you’ll find the city’s best parties on Södermalm’s rooftops.

SoFo is a particularly cool and eclectic part of the neighbourhood, known for its excellent street food, breweries, and underground arcade.

Located on Stockholm’s mainland next to Norrmalm, Vasastan is a lively yet relaxed part of the city loved for its antique shops, green parks, and family atmosphere.

The neighbouring Östermalm is also known for its relaxed family atmosphere and excellent choice of parks, but this area is more expensive as it’s like the Upper East Side of Stockholm with its palace-like buildings, upscale restaurants, and designer boutiques.

Djurgården is also ideal for families as it is quiet, green, and close to many child-friendly attractions, including the Gröna Lund amusement park, and many museums.

Although Stockholm is split into many islands, it’s surprisingly easy to get around the city. To reach your destinations quickly, you can take the underground metro, or for more scenic views, walk across its beautiful bridges.
