The Indy 500 typically features 33 competing drivers, with an 11-row starting grid of 3 cars apiece. The cars complete 200 laps of the circuit in an anti-clockwise direction, which amounts to a total distance of 500 miles. The winner of the race is the driver who finishes the 200th lap in first position, or the driver who is leading when the race is ended early in special circumstances.
The race is part of the IndyCar Series, and drivers are awarded points that contribute to their series total. The Indy 500 awards double the points of most IndyCar races, so rather than the typical 50 points, the overall winner of the race receives 100 points. Drivers also earn points for winning pole position, for qualifying in the top 9 places, for leading laps, and for leading the most laps during the whole race.
Manufacturers win points for their top 3 drivers, and they receive 10 points for each engine that reaches its change-out limit of 2,500 miles. If an engine fails to complete its life cycle or requires a component change, the manufacturer is deducted 20 points.
The single-seat, open cockpit, open-wheel cars used for the race are known as "Indy cars," and as of 2020 they all featured 2.2 L V6, twin-turbocharged engines. The horsepower range of these cars is 550-750.
Concession stands are located all around the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, with typical offerings including steak fries, gyros, Philly cheesesteaks, cheeseburgers, pork tenderloins, chicken tenders, hot dogs, and nachos. Alcoholic drinks are also widely available, including beer and cocktails, alongside soda and water. Beer can only be bought on the Indy 500 Sunday after 12:00.
