Nanjing’s first-time visitors will be best situated near Xinjiekou Square in Downtown Nanjing. This is considered the centrepoint of the city with excellent public transport access to easily visit each area of the city. Many of the city’s most desirable hotels are found around the square and top tourist spots like the Presidential Palace are found nearby.

While there are a number of major shopping malls near Xinjiekou Square, the best area for shopping is the Gulou District. It’s home to the famous Hunan Road Commercial Street where some of the city’s most stylish fashion boutiques can be found. The district is also home to Lion Bridge Walk Food Street where foodies can fill up on all kinds of classic and unusual Chinese dishes.

Culture cats will find plenty to keep their curious minds occupied in the Qinhuai District and particularly along the Qinhuai River where many of the city’s cultural attractions are located. Find museums, temples, monuments, and gardens that reflect Ninjang’s epic history as a capital city and a former Buddhist community.

Families and nature-lovers might prefer the Xuanwu Lake area for its greenery and big open spaces. Hang out in Xuanwu Park or go for a hike around the Purple Mountains to see some of the city’s most revered sights including the Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum and the Depositary of Buddhist Sutra. There are also plenty of family-friendly attractions nearby including the Nanjing Museum and the Nanjing Seismological Science Museum.
