Bobsleigh or bobsled is a team winter sport that involves making timed runs down a narrow, winding, banked track in a gravity-powered sleigh.
In St. Moritz, Switzerland, wealthy Victorian British tourists who were staying there in the late 19th century adapted simple toboggans to become the first bobsleds. After the 1993 comedy sports film Cool Runnings, which was based on the true story of the Jamaican national bobsleigh team's debut at the 1988 Winter Olympics, the sport gained a lot of popularity.
Bobsledders rely on a strong start, pushing the sleigh to gain maximum power from the start. In order to get to the finish line as quickly as possible, they must then steer perfectly to take the fastest route around the bends. In the Olympics, there are now 3 formats including monobob (for women only), 2-man (for men and women), and 4-man (for men only).
For the 2026 Winter Olympics, the bobsleigh competitions will be held at Pista Eugenio Monti in Cortina d'Ampezzo.
