As a Grand Slam tournament, the Australian Open contains 5 draws which take place simultaneously: men's singles, men's doubles, women's singles, women's doubles, and mixed doubles. The singles draws take place across 7 rounds, and the doubles draws take place over 6 rounds.
Men's singles matches are played to the best of 5 sets, whilst the men's doubles matches are only played to the best of 3 sets. All women's and mixed matches are also played to the best of 3 sets.
Along with the other 3 Grand Slams, The Australian Open will see the introduction of a 10-point tie-break in the final set, if the score reaches 6 games each, for the 2022 tournament. This will be enacted in all draws except mixed doubles, junior doubles, and wheelchair doubles; these draws will see the 10-point tie-break take place instead of a final set. This tie-break change is currently taking place on a trial basis only.
Due to the likelihood of high temperatures during the tournament, spectators are encouraged to bring hats, sunglasses, sun creams and lotions, and any other sun protection with them to the event, even if they are to be seated in a partially-covered stadium court. Staying hydrated is also highly recommended.
Most of the Australian Open's excellent food vendors are located in the Grand Slam Oval. There is a vast range of food available to buy, including but not limited to traditional pizzas, Shanghainese specialities, and gourmet burgers! Grand Slam Oval also hosts many bars and drinks outlets, including a range of alcoholic and soft beverages to enjoy in the sun. There are also some outlets to be found at the Western Courts, Court 3, the AO Hilltop, the AO Ballpark, and the Beach House.
During its 2-week tenure the AO is also home to a collection of award-winning chefs, including Ben Shewry (Atrium Eatery & Bar) and Scott Huggins (Penfolds Bistro or Restaurant). Booking is advised at these sit-down restaurants.
There are four main entrance points into the venue:
Wheelchair access is available at each of the main access points. When entering Rod Laver Arena, the lifts are located at Doors 8 and 17. When entering Margaret Court Arena, the lifts are located at Doors 15 and 20.
