Alpine skiing - also known as downhill skiing - is the sport of sliding down snow-covered slopes on skis with fixed-heel bindings; other types of skiing such as cross-country or ski jumping use skis with free-heel bindings.
Since 1936, the discipline has been a part of the Winter Olympics. In 1886, in Oslo, a competition that was similar to the modern slalom was introduced. As is to be expected, Alpine nations typically dominate the competition, such as Austria.
For the 2026 Winter Olympics, the alpine skiing competitions will be held at Olympia delle Tofane (women's competition) and Bormio Stelvio (men's competition)
